Cleveland Public Library’s new 255,000 sq-ft Louis Stokes Wing nearly doubles the existing space of the Main Library and adds reading rooms and stacks, state-of-the-art technology, and an auditorium. The design of the Stokes Wing blends in with the historic Main Library in both the height of its corner pavilions and selection of marble from the same quarry. Its convex volume consists of a dramatic floor-to-ceiling grit glass. Restoration of the Main Library retained its important historic elements and features, while new finishes were sympathetic to the original marble, oak, and walnut. The old and new buildings intersect underground and are separated at grade by the Eastman Reading Garden, one of the most beloved green spaces in downtown.
